Level contours with Manifold GIS

Proving what Manifold GIS does with digital models, I find that the toy does more than what we have seen so far for simple spatial management. I will use as an example the model that we created in the exercise of Streets with Civil 3D.

Import a digital model

In this Manifold is a powerful donkey, you can import from the common formats that store surface data, such as ESRI, ENVI, IDRISI, ERDAS, etc. Also data contained in basic formats such as dbf, csv, txt.

File> import> surface

And that's it, I created a comment type component with the properties of the original file, such as projection, program with which it was created, etc. In case of being coordinate files, it asks for the order in which they are entered and the type of numeric field.

If you want to work data inside a component, to convert it to surface, it is only done Copy> paste as surface

Create contour lines

To create contour lines, you do the following:

And here you can choose individual curves, or an incremental one, the first one is placed and each one adds up. In this case, I decide the 191 and with an increase of 1.

You can also choose whether to put the level curves or also the area between them, once they are colored by the default theming, of elevations. This is created as a component type drawing.

Create 3D View

To do this, the surface is created with a subcomponent called Terrain, This can be seen as 3D view, with the right button is chosen if you want overlay from other layers, flooded surface, texture, Wireframe And exaggerated elevation.

To insert a profile, it is created as if you were going to make a component, choosing elevation. Request the dependency surface and then the line can be modified by adding vertices.

Not bad, if we consider this to be part of the extension Surface Tools, like any GIS tool, the theming is a luxury, simple to create surfaces, but it is quite short in terms of practicality and other operations with the results. At least create an isometric view with greater freedom cost me a good time, it also affects that the objects it generates (curves, basins, areas between curves) are not an attribute of the layer, so when updating the model you have to generate them again.
