AutoCAD-AutoDeskMicrostation-Bentley

Geofumadas: 30 years of AutoCAD and Microstation

After almost 30 years of these two programs, which by the way seem to be among the few surviving so long of evolutionary history, I have taken the time to consider the topic to show some of the most important milestones in the process, which we Allow us to remember what has happened and what we can assume in the short term.

In general, both programs are on a similar timeline but with different marketing and development strategies. The two began as programs for assisted design, then they were venturing into vertical lines, in the current state, AutoDesk became so popular as to take over a large part of the market in terms of Architecture and Engineering, now venturing a lot into the multimedia world and Manufacturing . While Bentley was left with a smaller sector, with its orientation towards large companies in Engineering, architecture and industrial plants. For this, I include some relevant aspects of the market where programs such as CATIA, Pro / IGENEER and UniGraphics have a large participation although not very visible to our environment.

Year AutoCAD Microstation
I The Beginnings

Pseudostation

For 4 years AutoCAD took a significant advantage by being geared towards personal computer users. On the Bentley side there was nothing but His predecessor Intergraph with high technology to operate on Main Frames or mini computers connected to a terminal for graphics.

In 1979 the IGES standard is created.

1980 AutoCAD Version 1.0
It was born from the MicroCAD program, later it was called INTERACT (1978), developed by Mike Riddle in SPL who was the first to run on the mainstream and ran on the computer called Marinchimp 9900 (others only did it on main frames or microcomputers). The 16 co-founders of AutoDesk buy it and rewrite it in the C and PL / 1 language with the intention of promoting a CAD software for PC that will cost around US $ 1,000.
It was one of the first CAD programs to run on PC.
CATIA survived from the last decade, which emerged in 1977 and Unigraphics from 1971 which to date remain as leaders in specialized mechanical design.
Intergraph IGDS Editor
Although Intergraph was a company that developed high technology from 1969, Even its system was a low-cost editor for Interactive Graphics Design System (IGDS) on VAX superminicomputers. Prior to 1980 a CAD system cost US $ 125,000, with 512 Kb memory and less than 300 MB disk.

With the arrival of PCs, an IBM with 64k of RAM cost US $ 5,000.

1981 AutoCAD Version 1.2
An additional plus was included for dimensioning, with extra payment.
1982 AutoCAD Version 1.3
This year AutoCAD is presented in the COMDEX as the first CAD program that runs on a PC, that's why it was called AutoCAD 80 and AutoCAD 86, in reference to the PCs called 8086, although it is available for sale until 1983. Supports more than 40 items, the cursor first appears, basic parameters for plotter printing are created. Numbers are standardized to colors.

This year CADPlan was born, which was later called CADVANCE. Also this year CATIA I is launched.

II DOS TimingsAutocad history AutoCAD in the following 4 years creates internationalization strategies, reaches 50,000 users and comes to be termed the best CAD program.

Meanwhile, Microstation did not exist as such, but it was Pseudostation that became an IGDS format editor from a PC without the need to use the Intergraph programs.

1983 AutoCAD Version 1.4
Until this year the versions of AutoCAD 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 are released
First version of AutoCAD in German language. It was $ 1,400, the competition was VersaCAD that had been around since 1980.

This graph has been improved following the post of Shaan Hurly summarizes almost 26 milestones in AutoCAD history, in which significant steps stand out such as: Getting ahead of working for personal computers, buying GenericCAD users to reach one million, ability to expand globally, and a nose for acquiring potential technologies. It is always leading the way although not with fully integrated products, but innovative like Maya, WS and their foray into the Mac world.

History of autodesk autocad bentley

The other chart depicts the 13 milestones that Bentley recognizes within a cycle that includes between the 14 and 18 milestones described above. Among the actions that stand out the most as positive decisions, is the use of just 3 formats in their entire trajectory (although this seems to have lagged the use of 64 bits until V8), their ability to natively edit the dwg / dxf format and ingenuity to standardize all your lines in formats that interact outside of Bentley. It lags behind in popularity albeit with an enviable client base, in a high meditation pace for momentous steps, especially with the change from long-term stable formats.

History of autocad microstation

Apparently, the challenge of the next two years for these companies is not to compete for the market, both are clear about their position and are worthy examples of entrepreneurship based on opportunities. With the trends that mark the globalization of technological markets, its challenges are in achieving innovation to interact with other people's products under the BIM approach, in an environment convulsed by the incursion of gadgets, dependence on the web, the rebound of emerging technologies like Apple and the noise caused by disparate markets and OpenSource.
