Google Maps offline and download georeferenced images

offlinesoft Few alternatives have come out to ensure that the browsing data in Google is cached in order to be consulted once we are not connected to the Internet. Although Google Earth itself caches, it is not certain where that is saved, such as to transfer it to another disk or keep it in case we install a new version of the browser or format the machine.

For the time being StitchMaps It has been an outlet for downloading images, but the alternative of downloading them in a georeferenced mosaic has not yet been seen as in this case they can even be downloaded and loaded in ArcGIS with different levels of scale.

These two solutions that I am going to present are interesting, although they do not work with Google Earth but with Google Maps, but they are an economical alternative to that intention of being able to retain navigation data in a controlled way or load them from ArcGIS at a different level of approach. Both are created by the company Offline Soft.

View Map

This is a very powerful browser, which allows you to simultaneously view the layer of images and maps. But the most interesting thing is that its technology allows the areas where it has been browsed to be cached, in a folder that we can choose from.

In this way, the information can be consulted again even when there is no connection and as a destination for the cache, a server path can be chosen so that all users can consult this data without consuming the Internet link. Also that folder could be transferred to another machine ... great.

The other interesting thing is that places can be stored as tabs, such that it is possible to see different windows without having to be navigating to each zone.

For $ 29.95 I find an interesting investment, the trial version can be downloaded to not buy what we have not tried.

Here you can download the trial version of Map View.

Map Export

Map Export is a development oriented to GIS, as it allows downloading and exporting images from Google Maps in georeferenced mosaic. It is always possible to choose between Google Satelite Images, Street Maps and Terrain.

But let's see that you have this download that guides you to the GIS:

1. Downloading images

Map Export can download the mosaic images to a folder that we can choose. It is possible to select the coordinates of the window to download, manually or with a window on the map. You can also choose the type of layer, then the lower panel shows the download, number of images and controls to stop or resume the download.

offlinesoft

It is interesting that this download driver can make different tasks running at the same time, also can be configured a dialup, in which if the connection is dropped, return immediately the download is resumed.

2. Different levels of approach

The right panel allows you to download 18 different zoom levels, and for each of them creates a folder with the mosaic of images.

offlinesoft

In this case, I have selected 5 levels, with images type jpg, as you see, also created the jwg file so that when calling them from a mapping program come georeferenced.

offlinesoft

It is possible to choose omp, jpg, gif, png and bmp formats. This functionality of different levels of scale makes it better than Stitch Maps, which only allows one level to be lowered at the same time, and although that allows lower georeference, the fact that merges into a single makes it lose consistency between different levels of approach because the calibration file only calibrates the outer edges.

The trial version is only possible to download images up to 11 level, with an approximate height of 80 mts.

Do this with Google Earth Enterprise but under Google's crazy standards, by doing this with Map Export it is possible to create your own image server using Google data.

3 Archive for ArcGIS

When downloading the images and choosing the option "include ESRI world file", create an xml file that handles the mosaic to be loaded from ArcGIS, because if they are fixed, the file contains the projection of the images and the folders where the images are stored at a different scale.

Map Export seems to me an excellent solution for downloading maps of Google Maps, well used as an investment.

Here you can download the trial version of Map Export.
