Measuring a route in Google Earth 5.0

Earlier we saw that the best of Google Earth 5, the historical images are the most outstanding, we had also assumed that this version would bring the ability to interact with the GPS, the case of measuring a distance en route is possible, using the tool to size.

Mark the route

Marking the route is as simple as clicking through the route. To delete a point, you just have to left click when it turns green.

Let's see how many kilometers I traveled yesterday:

To start, I came running from my house to the Olympic track, so those 120 meters count, then I gave 10 laps, more or less in the second lane (424 x 10) = 4,240

In total, 4,350 meters that would mean 4.3 kilometers ... poof, that last lap was almost walking because of my thirty-something.

Units can be measured in meters, miles, nautical miles, centimeters, feet, yards, and smoots. The latter, curiously Google has integrated it into both Google Calculator and Google Earth, I suppose it has to do with a nostalgic reason since it is not even recognized as a standard measure; a smoot is equivalent to 1.7018 meters and was Created by a fraternity of the Technological Institute of Masachussetts, that's why it is only used in some places in the United States.

Using gps files

Google earth 5.0It is possible to load a captured file with a gps, for this you make "file / open" and you can select files with exemptions:

  • .gpx which is a widely used xml format
  • .loc from EasyGPS, both popularized by Topografix
  • .mps (mapsource) made famous by Garmin

To connect Google Earth with GPS, you make "tools / gps", and then choose between Garmin and Magellan.

The options can be set to adjust the altitudes to the ground.
