Live Writer for disconnected bloggers

There are few things Micrososft has done that can be called impressive and this is one of them. Is about live Writer, An application specifically for blog owners that solves many drawbacks of writing directly to the service provider's dashboard.

What I liked the most:

1. It is compatible with many blogging platforms.

Just by choosing the “add new blog service” option, the system has a wizard that allows you to initially choose between share point blog service or live spaces (as Microsoft always suggests its tortures) but then when choosing any other, just add the blog url, username and password the system recognizes the platform with which it is mounted among them is compatible with:

  • WordPress
  • Blogger
  • LiveJournal
  • TypePad
  • Moveable Type
  • Community Server

2. Can be written offline

This is the best, because you can write the posts, and save them as local drafts and choose when to upload them. The system recognizes the normal processes of labels and categories, you can even choose the date and time of publication. I use it when I travel to places where there is no connection, I write and that is why some days several posts appear at once, or write several on the same day and put different days of publication ... so they don't forget you 🙂

Although you work offline you can preview the post.

3. Very robust wysiwyg editor.

Its editor is, like many others, although I find its simplicity to manage tables and images very practical, something that costs a lot with the Wordpress panel. With images you can even add custom watermarks, shadows or borders and the alignment is pretty good.

The same with images, it is good that it supports copy/paste from other applications, while in Wordpress you have to upload the images first and then place them… not to mention Blogger.

4. Interaction with what you have above

In this it is very good, you can open an already published post and edit it locally, although here you need a search engine by tags or dates. You can also choose an ftp, so that what you post is stored on the blog but your images are hosted in another space ... for what your hosting has limits or that your provider does not guarantee backups.

5. Open to development

image In a short time, many have already developed some very practical plugins, such as adding AdSense ads, inserting videos, image galleries and while reading for sure someone is doing something you occupy ...

The bad?

Well, first, with the maps plugin you can only add Virtual Earth maps, although since it is open to development, it doesn't take long for someone to do something for other services ... and hopefully Microsoft will accept it. But it does accept copying the code provided by google maps and they are displayed normally.

Also from time to time it crashes, although it doesn't collapse it does like a “thinking about your death”, but then it comes back to life.

In addition, it is difficult to configure the UTF characters at the beginning.

If you have a blog, it's worth it To try it.
