Geospatial perspective and SuperMap

Geofumadas contacted Wang Haitao, Vice President of SuperMap International, to experience first-hand all the innovative geospatial solutions offered by SuperMap Software Co., Ltd.

1.Please tell us about SuperMap's evolutionary journey as China's leading supplier of GIS vendor

SuperMap Software Co., Ltd. is an innovative GIS platform software and services provider. It was founded in 1997 in Beijing (headquarters). The most important milestone is that SuperMap was the first listed GIS software company in China in 2009. SuperMap has focused on developing GIS platform software, application software and online cloud services since its inception in 1997. By Now, SuperMap has joined hands with more than 1,000 green partners to empower information from governments, institutions and businesses in various industries. Meanwhile, SuperMap is dedicated to developing the foreign market. By now, SuperMap has successfully entered Asia, Europe, Africa and South America and other countries and regions and has developed distributors and partners from more than 30 countries and end users from more than 100 countries.

2.What are your latest offers?

SuperMap's latest product is SuperMap GIS 10i, which includes GIS Server, Edge GIS Server, Terminal GIS, Online GIS Platform. Furthermore, SuperMap GIS 10i integrates AI GIS technology and further innovates Big Data GIS, New 3D GIS, Cloud Native GIS and Cross Platform GIS to establish a system of five key technologies of “BitCC” for GIS platform software.

3.What role can GIS play in the effective management of smart cities? Which of your products is specifically intended for smart cities? How is your product different from other more popular GIS software?

Due to spatial characteristics, GIS plays an indispensable role in smart cities. First, the information related to GIS is the basic information for the management of smart cities; second, GIS provides an effective provider for various types of integrated urban information applications, which can help the effective integration of information resources and achieve better development and utilization of resources; Third, the use of GIS technology can provide support for geographic visualization, geographic decision, geographic layout, and geographic control for smart city applications.

In the field of smart cities, SuperMap offers comprehensive “one platform, one network, one field” solutions based on cities, districts, counties, streets, parks, and even buildings. “One platform”, that is, the smart city spatio-temporal big data platform, provides a unified platform for the integration, management and sharing of regional information resources. “A network” refers to the applications of network city management, social governance, street and rural governance and others. For urban governance, it provides digital management in urban governance, dynamic monitoring of the state of the city, and analysis and judgment of the urban situation to comprehensively improve the level of urban governance. “One filed”, namely, refers to smart parks, smart fields and other applications, mainly in the form of parks and sites. Integrates BIM with GIS to provide refined service and management applications for park and course planning, construction, and management, and improve management service capabilities and competitiveness in the field.

Compared to other GIS software vendors, SuperMap has great advantages in spatial big data and new 3D GIS technology. In addition, SuperMap can provide users with comprehensive solutions in smart city + urban planning, construction, management and others.

4. How does the integration of BIM and GIS benefit the construction sector? Has Supermap been able to create a brand in digital construction? Share your best BIM + GIS integration case study.

BIM and GIS integrations allow construction users to introduce the actual large geographic context within a project to accurately assess environmental impact, accelerate project delivery, and improve operations and maintenance of completed assets.

One such case is the Beijing Subcentre Smart Construction Supervision Platform. In this case, the seamless integration of BIM and GIS provides design and construction teams with geospatial information to better understand current conditions and help them deliver results more efficiently and accurately under a very limited construction schedule.

Furthermore, based on outstanding 3D GIS techniques and IoT data, the platform can provide experts and other stakeholders with real-time simulation of construction progress for better evaluation and management and maintenance of the entire life cycle.

5.How has the adoption of SuperMap products been so far? What steps are you taking to increase awareness and adoption?

For now, “SuperMap has the third largest share of the global GIS market, and the first largest share of the Asian GIS market. Meanwhile, the report indicates that with rapid growth in more than 20 years, SuperMap Software is now the largest Chinese GIS provider, and the leading GIS providers in the Chinese market," according to the Market Research Study Report of Geographic Information Systems published by ARC Advisory Group.

To further enhance the SuperMap brand and increase adoption, SuperMap continues to focus on developing and providing industry-leading and competitive technologies and products. And SuperMap has insisted that quality is the top priority since its inception. At the same time, in the field of business, SuperMap has joined partners to carry out project cooperation, providing successful multi-industry solutions and applications. Furthermore, SuperMap has good relationships with many universities around the world and makes contributions in providing software and technical support for better GIS education. In addition, SuperMap has developed SuperMap GIS open source software as well as SuperMap iClient and others for underprivileged users around the world.

6. Where do you see SuperMap in the next few years?

Coming soon, SuperMap will actively participate in the fields of urban design, smart city, BIM + GIS, AI GIS and others, according to the development of SuperMap technologies of Big Data GIS, 3D GIS, AI GIS, as well as the types of users and user bases around the world such as governments, universities.

7. What steps are you taking to make GIS smarter in the age of AI?

SuperMap released SuperMap GIS 10i at the 2019 GIS Software Technology Conference. SuperMap GIS 10i fully integrates AI technology to build technology systems from “BitCC”, which recently added AI GIS to the product system.

For the AI GIS, it consists of 3 parts:

  • GeoAI: Spatial data analysis and processing algorithm that integrates AI and is the product of AI and GIS.
  • AI for GIS: Use of AI capabilities to enhance GIS software features and user experience.
  • GIS for AI: use of GIS analysis and visualization technology to perform spatial visualization and further spatial analysis of AI output results.

SuperMap will practice smarter GIS by following the previous IA GIS trilogy.

8. What are the most important standards that your software applies for interoperability with the geospatial, engineering and operations industries?

In 2017, SuperMap opened an open standard 3D spatial model (S3M) data specification for fast streaming, uploading, displaying massive and heterogeneous 3D geospatial data across multiple devices and platforms. And it has enabled not only visualization, but also 3D spatial query and analysis of large spatial data. Furthermore, S3M is the first group data standard published by the Chinese Association for the Geospatial Information Society. Now S3M has been widely adopted in over 20 notable companies from various industries, such as DJI, Altizure, etc.
