Twingeo launches its 4th Edition

Geospatial?

We have arrived with great pride and satisfaction at the 4th edition of Twingeo Magazine, right at this time of global crisis that, for some, has become the driver of changes and challenges. In our case, we continue to learn - without stopping - of all the benefits that the digital universe offers and the importance of including technological resources in our common work.

After more than 6 months living the Covid 19 pandemic, we are seeing more and more reports, tools and solutions based on the Geospatial industry for monitoring the virus. Companies like Esri have made spatial data analysis and management tools available to you to determine expansion. So, is the term "Geospatial" being given importance? Do we understand the potential it can offer?

Knowing that we are already entering the 4th digital era, are we sure that we can handle everything that geospatial data implies? Are the actors involved in technological development, data capture, execution of plans and projects, really at the level of this? great revolution?

Let's begin to wonder if from the foundations of education, the Academy is prepared to take on the challenges of this 4th digital age. Let's remember what was expected of the future 30 years ago? And let's think about what is the role of geosciences and Geomatics today? What awaits us in the coming years? All these questions have been put on the table in Twingeo, specifically in the central article that encompasses the main theme of the magazine “Geospatial perspective”.

“There are explosion cycles in innovation. Right now we are about to see one start ”

There is a very interesting phrase that fits the concerns we mentioned, "To know where we are going, you have to know where we come from." If we are willing to find out, there is a lot of work to do.

What is the content?

The recent publication focuses on the “Geospatial Perspective”, where it is reflected how it has been - and in some cases how it is expected to be - the evolution of communication between human beings-environment-technologies. The vast majority of us are clear that absolutely everything we do is geolocated, -our reality is tied to the territory we inhabit-, which means that the information generated through mobile devices or other types of sensors has a spatial component. Therefore, we are constantly creating spatial data, which allows us to identify patterns for decision making at the local, regional or global level.

When mentioning "Geospatial", most could associate it with GIS Geographic Information Systems, drones, satellite images and others, but we know that it is not only that. The term “Geospatial” encompasses everything from data capture processes to the inclusion of the AEC-BIM cycle to achieve follow-up and details of projects. Every day more technologies include the geospatial component in their solutions or products, establishing itself as an undeniably essential feature, but not necessarily its final product will be reflected on a map.

In a little more than 50 pages, Twingeo collects interesting interviews with personalities from the geospatial field. Starting with Alvaro Anguix, General Director of the gvSIG Association, who spoke about “Where is free GIS software going”.

A question that in a certain way we were able to answer ourselves by attending the 15th International Conference of gvSIG, where we were part of an environment of professionals and scholars of the geographic space who showed their success stories using this powerful tool. She highlighted the remarkable growth that the gvSIG community has had, one more proof to understand that the trend regarding the use of free software continues to multiply over time.

"Beyond the expansion of the use of GIS, this has a clear consequence already in the present and that in the near future it will increase." Alvaro Anguix

One of the most controversial issues in relation to GIS is the debate on the use of free or proprietary software, and the advantages that one or the other has. The reality is that what an analyst or geoscience professional is most looking for is that the data to be handled is interoperable. Based on this, the technology that effectively and efficiently provides the tools to get the most out of the data will be chosen, if in turn it does not have a license, update, maintenance cost and the download is free, it is a plus to consider.

We also seek opinions from personalities such as Wang Haitao, Vice President of SuperMap International. Haitao participated in this 4th edition of Twingeo to reveal details and opinions of SuperMap GIS 10i, and how this tool offers extensive advantages for the processing of geospatial data.

"Compared to other GIS software vendors, SuperMap has great advantages in spatial Big Data and new 3D GIS technology"

In the framework of the main theme of the magazine, Jeff Thurston Canadian GIS professional and editor of numerous geospatial publications, talks about "101st Century Cities: Construction and Infrastructure XNUMX."

Thurston highlights the need for the correct establishment of infrastructure in places that are not considered Metropolises, since generally local actors focus on technological and spatial development of large cities by introducing: sensors, artificial intelligence - AI, digital twins - Digital Twins, BIM, GIS , leaving out potentially important areas.

"Technologies have long exceeded border lines, but GIS and BIM policy and management have failed to reach their highest order of use and effect."

Promoting the growth of conurbations through the introduction of new geospatial solutions could be key to achieving an intelligent environment. We could imagine a world in which information could be available and modeled in real time, we think so.

It should also be mentioned that Twingeo reveals the new strategies, collaborations and tools that the technology giants bring such as:

  • The addition of new publications to the Bentley Institute of Bentley Systems,
  • Vexcel, which recently released UltraCam Osprey 4.1,
  • Here and its partnership with Loqate, for delivery optimization
  • Leica Geosystems with its new 3D laser scanning package, and
  • New publications from Esri.
  • Agreements between the Scottish Government and the PSGA Geospace Commission

Simultaneously, you will find the interview with Marc Goldman Director of Architecture Engineering and Construction Industry Solutions for Esri United States. Goldman expressed his vision about the BIM + GIS integration, and the benefits that this relationship brings to the shaping of Smart Cities. This has been another of the questions between experts in the construction industry and geoscientists, which of the two is the most suitable for managing spatial data and modeling it? We should not necessarily separate one from the other and more when together they offer best results.

"To harness the full potential of BIM, the integration workflows between BIM and GIS must be integrated." Marc goldman

In any case, the creation or establishment of a Smart City or Smart City, requires feeding on the geographical component. All its elements must be clearly geopositioned -information, sensors and others-, they cannot be isolated systems if the space is to be modeled as closely as possible with reality.

Speaking of BIM, great news is the BIMcloud as a Service of the Hungarian company GRAPHISOFT, known for offering modeling solutions through its leading software ARCHICAD, and now committed to the creation of cloud-based data storage platforms.

"BIMcloud as a service is exactly what architects need to move to work from home without missing a beat"

The case study of this edition is entitled “6 Aspects to consider in the integration of the Registry-Cadastre”. In this the author Golgi Alvarez - Editor of Geofumadas-, expresses how the joint work between the Cadastre and the Property Registry can be a very interesting challenge for the modernization processes of property rights systems.

In a very pleasant reading, he invites us to ask ourselves questions about the standardization of cadastral processes, the change in the registration technique, the linking of registration registration, and the challenges to be faced in the near future.
